PORT KLANG, Sept 30 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has dispelled allegations that the New Economic Policy (NEP) benefited cronies and focused only on one particular race.
He said the policy which was introduced in 1971, had been instrumental in addressing the distribution of wealth imbalances faced by various ethnic groups nationwide.
“NEP is not about cronysm. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak continues with his efforts to distribute wealth to everyone (through the NEP).
“No one is going to lose anything from this policy but will gain from the growth of the country and share what they get from the growth,” he told reporters after launching the maiden voyage of the MV Arca Emerald vessel at Northport here today.
Also present were Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
The vessel which can accommodate about 4,000 vehicles at any given time, today set sail for Sabah and Sarawak on its maiden voyagae from Wharf 21, Northport here.
